CITY ARTS DIRECTOR, June 1997 — present
Administrator of the City's program to promote the artistic and cultural development of the City of Spokane. Policy direction provided by Spokane Arts Commission (16 member advisory board). Reports to the Mayor through the Division Director of Economic Development. Directs all aspects of city arts program including public art, promotion and exhibitions, and extensive public relations projects. Works with many different artists, arts organizations, arts businesses, media and others with diverse and often conflicting community agendas. Maintains effective communication and relationships with City officials, community organizations, artists, citizens, visitors to the community and media representatives.
- PUBLIC RELATIONS AND MEDIA: Works with the Marketing Committee of Arts Commissioners
and community volunteers to develop and initiate marketing projects in the
community. The Spokane Arts Commission promotes the arts of the region
through the "Find Art" campaign that includes the
www.spokanearts.org
website, collateral materials such as the Sculpture Walk Guide,
Kids Love Art, the Performing Arts Guide, the Art Sites
Guide, the Arts Directory and the Arts
Calendar/Newsletter (in both print and html form). Between 75,000
-100,000 people use the
www.spokanearts.org
website annually. SAC has distributed more that 50,000 brochures in the
past 18 months. Works extensively with local media to do radio and
television interviews, op-ed pieces and joint promotions such as the
Spokane Visual Arts Tour and Season Preview. Because of the "Find Art"
campaign, the Spokane Arts Commission was a semi-finalist for the
Chamber's 2003 Agora Award in the category of non-profit arts
organization.
EXHIBITIONS: Coordinates the exhibitions program for the Chase Gallery in City Hall (8 per year). Supervise and participate in curatorial decision-making, scheduling, exhibition design, installation, interpretive materials and public relations. Work with Exhibiting Committee of Arts Commissioners and community volunteers to execute the above functions. Exhibitions include one-person exhibitions, group exhibitions organized thematically and by critical concern, traveling exhibitions and exhibitions for community groups.
PUBLIC ART PROGRAMS: Coordinates the City "Percent for Art" Program, facilitating the acquisition process for other departments, and assists other community groups such as the Public Facilities District and private developers with the art acquisition process. Maintains and promotes existing city arts collection. Serves as registrar for city art collection including portable and site specific works. Work with community groups to site donated art objects/ art commissions on city grounds. Recent projects include the art for the Airport, the Water Reclamation Facility, Fire Stations 4 and 18, and art for the new Spokesman Review Print Facility. Responsible for the downtown banner projects and the community murals program facilitated by the Outreach Coordinator.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: Facilitates communication and acts as a catalyst for collaboration and cooperation among community arts organizations, facilitating linkages to other community groups. Facilitates training and professional development activities such as the Donna Walker Kuhne Audience Development Workshop in October.
FILM: As of May 2005, responsible for coordinating the film liaison program for the City of Spokane. Coordinate with the film program manager to revise regulations as relate to major motion picture production in City. Work with film permitting processes, liaison to other city departments and agencies, and coordinate the City's role in the marketing of Spokane as a film location.
FUNDRAISING AND GRANT WRITING: Oversees development of fundraising program including the membership program for the Spokane Arts Fund (a 501c3 in support of the Arts Department), direct solicitation of sponsorship and in-kind contributions. Researches grant opportunities for projects to meet Arts Commission goals. Prepares and processes grant applications. Administers grants received and assures contract compliance, final reporting and related tasks. Recent grants received include the Washington State Arts Commission, Foundation Northwest, Lodging Tax Grant, Washington Insurance Council and contributions from the Davenport Arts District.
BUDGET MANAGEMENT: Responsible for the City Arts Department budget of $120,000 from the City General Fund. The total budget including grants, contributions and in-kind contributions equaled $492,000 for fiscal year 2003. Develop budget in collaboration with staff, the Spokane Arts Commission and the Spokane Arts Fund Board. Make presentations to City Council, Lodging Tax Advisory Committee and other groups for budget requests.
PERSONNEL: Supervise work of 36 interns, volunteers and Arts Commissioners. Supervised the work of one full-time Outreach Coordinator and one half-time secretary (1997 — 2004).

Chief Executive Officer for non-profit community art museum and art education facility. Administer museum program under the policy direction of a 15 member Board of Trustees. Direct all aspects of museum program with exhibitions, permanent collection, extensive art education programs and museum shop.
- BUDGET MANAGEMENT: Responsible for budget management for young independent non-profit
corporation. Budget approximately $235,000 per annum for operating.
Develop budget in collaboration with paid staff, fundraising and finance
committees. Work with finance committee and Trust Officer to oversee
management of $950,000 endowment fund. Oversee management of
administrative processes including donor database resources, financial
management, accounting and office management. Supervise work of
secretary/office manager. Work with CPA and bookkeeper.
FUNDRAISING AND GRANTWRITING: Oversee membership program with 760 members including annual membership drive and renewals. Work with membership committee to develop opportunities to enhance growth membership. Work with fundraising committee to oversee Annual Fund Drive, Annual Dinner and Art Auction, Annual Art and Craft Show and Sale, Garden Walk, Museum Mart (garage sale) and other earned income projects. Solicit individual gifts for operating and endowment funds. Oversee exhibition sponsorship program. Solicit grant funding from federal and state agencies, private foundation and corporations. Received funding from the True Foundation, Tonkin Foundation, Wyoming Arts Council, US West Corporation, First Interstate Bank, and William Randolph Hearst Foundation.
COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT: Supervise and participate in the registration of collection of nearly 3,000 objects including works by Conrad Schwiering, Bavarian illustrator Carl Link, and many local and regional artists. Supervise computerization of the collections data and inventory of the collection. Work with the Exhibitions and Acquisitions Committee to seek acquisitions and evaluate acquisitions for accession. Solicit donations to the collection. Supervise the work of the preparator/registrar of the collection.

PUBLIC PROGRAMMING AND EDUCATION: Supervise the Education Curator in the development and execution of education programs including the Discovery Center stations, the school tour program, art classes for ages 3 to adult, public lectures by visiting artists and critics, the children's art library, and exhibitions of art work by children and youth. Supervise and work with Education Committee and paid staff to evaluate and plan education programs.
MEDIA AND PROMOTION: Work with graphic designer to develop new "image package" for the museum. Work with graphic designer to produce calendar of events, member mailings and promotional pieces for the museum and fundraising events. Develop press releases and promotional materials for all museum activities. Record PSA's for radio and television monthly. Presentation to community groups.
LONG RANGE PLANNING AND POLICY DEVELOPMENT: Worked with Board and Long Range Planning Committee to complete the long range plan, personnel policy, and other policy documents.
PERSONNEL: Select, train, motivate and evaluate museum staff of four full-time and four part-time staff members. Work with paid staff, board and committee chairs to oversee volunteer management of 130 volunteers.

one-person exhibitions, group shows and faculty and thesis exhibitions.
Successful exhibitions included: "David Hockney Photo-Collages," "An
Eclectic Eye: Selections from the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation,"
"Comics," "Ocho Inspiraciones Contemporaneas."
COLLECTIONS: 2,363 objects including approximately 1,700 Mexican Retablos, contemporary prints and photographs. Responsible for acquisitions, registration, care of the collection. Responsible for computerization of the collections data.
MEMBERSHIP AND FUNDRASING: Oversee the Friends of the Gallery organization. Funds raised through private contributions increased by 1,500% during tenure. Grants received from the National Endowment for the Arts, Institute of Museum Services and IBM.
PUBLIC PROGRAMMING: Organized school tours, programs for college classes and public lectures by visiting artists and critics. Gallery attendance increased 400% in five years.
TEACHING AND PERSONNEL: Supervised half-time museum educator/ preparator. Trained and supervised graduate assistants, interns and museum studies students, work study and volunteers. Taught Museum Studies to art and art history majors.
